DOWAGIAC — Around 150 students from Dowagiac middle and high schools embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to the Windy City last week, as the district, Amtrak and the Michigan Association of Rail Passengers teamed up to sponsor a special field trip, which they called the “2017 Orphan Train.” The name refers to the famous U.S. adoption program, which first arrived in Dowagiac in 1854. Local students departed from the 1903 Dowagiac train depot Wednesday morning and arrived at the famous Union Station in Chicago. The group then did some sight-seeing around the metropolis — including stopping by “the bean” at Millennium Park — before returning to the train station in order to grab lunch at the McDonald’s inside, where Ronald McDonald greeted them. The students then headed back to Dowagiac via the train.
