Dowagiac sophomore Rebecca Franklin earned her second consecutive All-Wolverine Conference golf honor after finishing in a second-place tie at the league tournament at Cheshire Hills in Allegan Wednesday.
The tournament was plagued by weather issues early on, but after an hour and a half rain delay, the league was able to finish the event and crown Sturgis as the conference champion.
The Trojans won all eight jamboree events and had no trouble backing that up at the conference tournament Wednesday as they finished with a team score of 360.
Host Allegan finished a distant second with a score of 394, while the Chieftains placed fourth with a 439.
Sturgis amassed 24 points to edge Allegan, which finished second with 21 points.
Three Rivers was third with 18, Otsego fourth with 14 and Dowagiac fifth with 13.
“We finished fourth in the tournament, beating Otsego by one stroke, but they were far enough ahead of us to stay in fourth-place for the year,” Dowagiac coach Bob Turner said.
Three Rivers’ Erin Taylor earned league medalist honors as she won the conference tournament with a round of 79.
Sturgis’ Rachel Webb and Carli Sanford shared runner-up honors with Franklin as they all shot 88.
Dowagiac’s Greta Whitaker just missed earning first-team all-conference, but was honorable mention after shooting 99 at the league tournament Wednesday.
Taylor finished with a stroke average of 41.6, while Webb was second with an average of 43.2.
Franklin was third overall with a 44.3 stroke average. Whitaker tied with Hope Ogg of Sturgis for 11th-place overall with a stroke average of 51.5.
“We were led the whole year by sophomores Rebecca Franklin and Greta Whitaker,” Turner said. “Rebecca made all-conference for the second year, while Greta put her name in the mix and flirted with all-conference and came away with honorable mention missing by one place. Rebecca played solid all year long and had everyone in the conference taking note. She averaged 44.3 in the conference for 3rd best in the league.
“Greta started slow and then put on a little run where she put up a 44 and 46 in back to back jamborees. She shot better than her average at the conference tournament and finished 11th in the league. She will be one to watch next year, not that this year is over — regionals are next week.”
The Chieftains will now begin preparations for Thursday’s Division 3 district tournament at Island Hills Golf Club in Centreville.
“I thought it was a good year for the program,” Turner said. “We started the year with only two girls having played in a varsity jamboree and were able to have seven different girls play in two or more jamborees, so those five that played in their first jamborees gained some valuable experience. Given the fact that we are so young — no seniors on the team — they can use that experience to improve over the next couple years.”
