Athlete Showcase: Dowagiac’s Richard Payne

Richard Payne is a senior on the Dowagiac football team.

What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as an athlete?

RP: Junior year helping the team making the playoffs.

Who is a “hero” in your life and why?

RP: My parents, who are always there for me when I need help with anything.

When are you the most nervous while you are competing?

RP: Right before the first snap.

How do you tend to work out/train when by yourself?

RP: I play basketball and I always run places.

What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not playing yours?

RP: Cross country.

Why are sports an important part of a high school experience?

RP: I feel like everyone should play, because I think playing a sport in high school will help you with life.

How would you give away $50,000?

RP: I would give it to Dowagiac sports.

If you could be the head coach of a team for a year, what team would you choose?

RP: The basketball team. No question.

If I did not play sports, I would…?

RP: Workout and work. I would be more involved in after school activities.

What is the most challenging thing for you to do in your sport?

RP: Dealing with soreness.

If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?

RP: The rules on hitting the quarterback.

What is the best compliment you have ever received?

RP: A Vicksburg guy said I was very difficult to block due to my speed and strength.

What was the scariest thing you have had to do? Are you glad you did it?

RP: My decision not to quit football because of a health condition. Yes, of course.

What was the last thing you saw someone do that really impressed you?

RP: My 145-pound cousin squat 405 pounds.

What is your favorite hobby? Why?

RP: Honestly, fishing.
