With temperatures soaring into the 90-degree range, Friday seemed like an ideal time to celebrate the newest frozen drink shop in Niles.
Mi Nutrition business owner Lisa DeMeulenaere hosted a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony that day at her business, at 1221 S. 11th St.
After cutting through a red ribbon, DeMeulenaere served up frozen drinks and product samples to the dozens that crowded her store.
Mi Nutrition officially opened shop at the location Aug. 27. The store was formerly the site of On Staffing Solutions, which moved to a larger location next door.
The smoothies are created from Herbalife Nutrition products, which come in the form of powders and are blended with frozen fruits, sugar free syrups and pudding to create drinks.
There are more than 80 different smoothie flavors available, including coffee, chocolate and fruit flavors. A drink of the week will feature a continually feature a new flavor.
Additionally, the business will offer six flavors of tea.
“We have a variety for everybody,” DeMeulenaere said.
While it can be easy to grab the closest junk food morsel at any nearby convenience store, DeMeulenaere said she hopes to offer customers a healthy alternative to meals or snacking.
Each of the shakes is 200 calories and contains more than 20 vitamins and minerals.
Increasing healthy options across Niles was part of her inspiration for the business, she said.
“Niles doesn’t seem to have enough healthy options around here,” DeMeulenaere said. “I was born and raised in Niles and wanted to impact my own community. I think it is going to help people feel better.”
DeMeulenaere has served as a district manager in the restaurant business in Elkhart for 10 years. She has worked in the restaurant field for a total of 19 years. She took a break from the industry for about 10 years, while working as a foster parent.
After trying some Herbalife products, she said she liked them enough to want to create her own business.
“The goal is to make the world healthier and happier,” DeMeulenaere said.
DeMeulenaere said she will operate the business in partnership with a Herbalife distributor, but that no other employees were hired for the business operations.
It took two months to renovate the location, which now features a smoothie bar and a total of 11 seats. A menu featuring all 80 flavors is displayed on a bright orange wall.
“I am looking forward to networking with Niles,” DeMeulenaere said. “I am so excited to be a business owner in the city and to be able to work with everybody and be part of the chamber, so that I can work with other business owners.”
