Evelyn E. Davis Fleming, 88, of Niles, passed from this life peacefully surrounded by her grandchildren on Sept. 21, 2017, in South Bend.
She was born in Niles, to the late Elisha and Nann (Hess) Davis.
After graduating Niles High School, Class of 1948, Evelyn went on to further her education, receiving a degree in business from Detroit Institute.
She worked for several years at Healthwin and spent the majority of her career, more than 27 years, at the former Niles Simplicity Pattern Company. She was also employed by AT&T and will be greatly missed by all she welcomed to the Buchanan and Niles Senior Centers.
Evelyn was a woman of great faith. She was a member of the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Niles since the 1940s where she served as a nurse, in Sunday school, the finance committee and the choir. She was also active in the NAACP, a poll worker for elections, a board member of the Ferry Street Resource Center and was instrumental in the IDDFAR benefit run, which assisted many in obtaining college scholarships.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, Elisha and Nann (Hess) Davis; two brothers, Isaac E. Davis and Milmon M. Davis; two sisters, Florence Shepard and Mary Doty, and a sister-in-law, Geneva Davis.
She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Dorian Davis of DeWitt, Michigan, and Blair (Lori) Fleming of South Bend; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four sisters. Dora Bessie Webb, Lillian E. Austin, Nancy J. Smitherman, Debra C. Davis; five brothers, Thomas E. (Myrtle) Davis, Joseph S. (Linda) Davis, Walter W. (Chris) Davis, Nuri (Starita) Ansari (John Davis) and Paul F. (Nancy) Davis; along with countless lives she touched.
A time of visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at Brown Funeral Home in Niles. Funeral services will be at noon Friday, Sept. 29, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 601 Ferry St. Niles, with a time of visitation one hour prior. An interment will be hosted at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens.
