DOWAGIAC — The Dowagiac soccer team improved to 9-1 on the year with a 3-1 victory over visiting Bridgman Monday afternoon.

The Chieftains applied pressure to the Bees throughout the contest as they outshot Bridgman 35-8.

Dowagiac’s Alec Saylor scored all three goals for the Chieftains and now has 23 on the year.

Saylor opened the scoring in the 11th minute off an assist by Gage Williams, who returned to the line-up after being sick.

Bridgman tied the score at 1-1 10 minutes later as Tyler Strainbrock scored in the 21st minute.

It was all Dowagiac from there in the first half as Saylor and Williams teamed up again for the match-winning goal in the 35th minute.

Saylor completed the hat trick a goal two minutes later off the assist by Adrien Lee.

“Again, we are keeping up offensive pressure and controlling ball possession,” Dowagiac coach Mike Williams said. “We now have our full team back in time for tough conference play the next three weeks.”

Chieftain goalkeeper Victor Zavala recorded seven saves and played well in the net, according to Williams.

“He played one of his better games of the year,” he said. “Playing Blossomland in the spring has helped to prepare him for tough competition. We need him to be on his game going into tough conference play this week and the remainder of the year.”

Dowagiac returns to action Wednesday as it hosts Allegan in a Wolverine Conference match set to begin at 5 p.m.
