September DUS Starfish Story: Cindy Bennett, retired Patrick Hamilton secretary

The positive culture of any school depends on several factors —the safety and physical environment of the building, the learning and engagement of students and the respectful and trusting relationships with students and adults around the school.
At Patrick Hamilton, Mrs. Cindy Bennett, former secretary, was at the heart of that positive culture. She was professional and understanding to adults, ready to assist teachers with problems, and always kind and considerate of the students and their needs.
While Mrs. Bennett has retired from her position as Patrick Hamilton secretary, staff and students wanted to share some of the things they love about her the most and the things that truly made her a Starfish thrower.
Cindy is a friend to everyone. She will do most any favor you ask of her (within reason).
Cindy always came early, stayed late and never thought she was “finished” with any student. She would meet with students long after they left Patrick Hamilton to check in with them and encourage them as they continued on their journeys.
Her positive spirit is infectious, and she knows how to see the best in people.
Mrs. Bennett is always there when someone needs her. She is always right with us when we are wrong. She is always by our side when we need her.
She knows how to make you smile. She tells the most animated stories.
Cindy is the definition of a multi-tasker. She could answer the phone, take care of a child’s bloody nose, count school store money and call a student to the office all at the same time. Some days, she felt like Wonder Woman.
Cindy is so full of love, and I dare you to hear her laugh and not laugh, too.
Mrs. Bennett has an amazing voice and would share her musical talent with our school family at many Winter and Spring Music Programs. Hearing her sing is always treat, and we were so fortunate to have her share her talent with us.
Her joy is contagious. She always has a warm welcome for everyone and often finds the humor, bringing laughter and kindness to those around her.
Cindy made a difference to the staff and students at Pat Ham. She would always throw herself into something if she saw a need. A few examples of this would be noticing a child who was struggling with behavior and eating lunch with them a few days a week just to talk to them and support them, or planning and facilitating a wedding for a staff member who was struggling to make that happen.
She is very passionate and loves with her whole heart, and it shows.
Mrs. Bennett has family attending Patrick Hamilton, so we expect to hear her laugh in our halls again soon, but this time as a volunteer and doting grandma.
Thank you, Mrs. Bennett, for the difference you made in the lives of the students of Dowagiac.
