Rep. Miller: All local schools in line for state funding increase

State Rep. Aaron Miller today said all local K-12 school districts in communities he serves will receive the maximum increase in state funding in the new school budget.
Miller, of Sturgis, said every K-12 school district in the state is in line for an increase of $60 to $120 per student under the 2017-18 school aid budget, which is a record amount of state money dedicated to education. The schools in the communities he serves will all receive the $120-per-student amount to make up for funding inequities of the past.
“Rural schools in the past were not funded equally with larger, urban school districts, and the past few budgets have contained provisions to help alleviate the funding gap,” said Miller, who serves on the House Appropriations Committee. “All the school districts in St. Joseph and Cass counties will receive the greatest amount of per-student state funds.”
Miller said districts across Michigan will receive an additional $25 per high-school student on top of the increased funds.
“As a teacher, I can attest to the higher costs involved in providing high-school students with a quality education,” Miller said. “It is important that we give our future leaders, teachers and workers every opportunity to succeed.”
Miller was involved in budget discussions this spring and voted for the funding increases.
School districts in the communities Miller serves will receive the following estimated increases:
• Burr Oak Community School District, $87,166
• Cassopolis Public Schools, $219,683
• Centreville Public Schools, $199,912
• Colon Community School District, $132,220
