For many Americans, the next several days will be action packed.
As the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day weekend is a time filled with fun and excitement. Be it cruising down the open road for a quick vacation, hitting one of the area’s many beautiful beaches or simply hanging out with friends and family for an old fashioned backyard barbecue, the promise of warm weather draws many out of the house and into the great outdoors.
No matter what your plans are this weekend, we ask that you and your loved ones take a few moments to recognize the sacrifices from the millions of Americans who perished fighting so that their fellow citizens could live in peace.
Whether you visit one of the many local parades and celebrations commemorating Memorial Day Monday or simply thank a veteran in you know for their service, everyone should do their part to ensure that the meaning of the holiday is not lost.
Below are a few quotes about patriotism and sacrifice that we feel sum up the meaning of Memorial Day:
“The willingness of America’s veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.” — Jeff Miller, an American politician.
“In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” Martin Luther King Jr., civil rights activist.
“Memorial Day isn’t just about honoring veterans, its honoring those who lost their lives. Veterans had the fortune of coming home. For us, that’s a reminder of when we come home we still have a responsibility to serve. It’s a continuation of service that honors our country and those who fell defending it.” — Pete Hegseth, a U.S. soldier
“True patriotism isn’t cheap. It’s about taking on a fair share of the burden of keeping America going.” — Robert Reich, an American economist.
“I have long believed that sacrifice is the pinnacle of patriotism.” — Bob Riley, an American politician.
“Patriotism consists not in waving the flag, but in striving that our country shall be righteous as well as strong.” — James Bryce, an English diplomat.
“Memorial Day remains one of America’s most cherished patriotic observances. The spirit of this day has not changed – it remains a day to honor those who died defending our freedom and democracy.” — Doc Hastings, an American politician.
