Dowagiac Union Schools May Starfish Story: Kay Skogen

Sister Lakes Elementary would like to introduce Mrs. Kay Skogen.
Mrs. Skogen has worked for Dowagiac Schools for many years, 27 to be exact. Seventeen of those years were at Patrick Hamilton when it was a fifth- and sixth-grade building. She has worked in the library at Kincheloe elementary and is currently the media paraprofessional at Sister Lakes Elementary.
While at Sister Lakes, not only does she run the media center but she has also taken on many other responsibilities, including being a lunch aide, helping in the special education room and working with the Title 1 program.
Mrs. Skogen also works in the after school mentoring and tutoring program. Mrs. Skogen is the assistant director at E. Root Fitch Memorial Camp, where she prepares the menus, cooks and works on projects with students.
Each year, in her spare time, Mrs. Skogen puts together books that the students have written. The students are allowed to choose the subject to write about, then the books are judged and a special award is given to the student.
As you can tell, Kay loves to work with children in any capacity and she does so simply because she is someone who cares. It is also important to mention that she gives her time on Fridays to come to the school to finish any work, and makes time to meet with children who need her help.
Kay enjoys spending time with her four grandchildren, and in the past, she and her husband raised bulls, which she loves to share stories about. We are truly grateful to have her in our school.
