The Dowagiac soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to host Brandywine in a non-conference match Friday.
Alexa Martinez broke the scoreless tie with nine minutes left in the opening half as the Bobcats’ took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Amber Boocher was credited with the assist.
Krishna Devdhara scored the match-winner with five minutes left off a deflection from the goalie.
“Our defense still proves to be one of our biggest strengths. Offensively we really need to capitalize on our opportunities,” said Brandywine coach Katie Kovac. “We are getting so many good looks at the goal and not finishing.
“We had a great game, did a great job working the ball and playing as a team. We just need to finish. That’s the name of the game for us.”
The Chieftains’ lone goal came from Kellyn Daly, who now has scored all six goals for Dowagiac this season.
Grace Younger had 13 saves for the Chieftains, who host South Haven in a non-divisional Wolverine Conference match Wednesday.
Brandywine finished with 21 shots on goal. Makenna Bowen made 10 saves.
“The girls played hard tonight,” said Dowagiac coach Chad Davis, “It was an emotional, close game, but they stuck together. Even though we had a couple key missing players they did a nice job coming together as a team and working together.”
Brandywine vs. Comstock
The Bobcats defeated Comstock in a BCS Athletic Conference match Wednesday.
Cassie Luczkowski scored off a direct kick in the opening half, while Martinez scored in the final 40 minutes for Brandywine.
The Bobcats finished with 13 shots on goal. The Colts had eight shots.
“Our defense did a fantastic job,” Kovac said. “Comstock never backed down and kept putting on the pressure. They were on our half of the field for a majority of the game and our defense did a great job communicating and shutting them down. First half we held them to only six shots on goal and second half we held them to only two shots on goal.”
Defensive standouts for Brandywine were Mia Stella, Taylor Derscha, Alexis Garcia, Rachel Laurita and Chelsie Luczkowski.
Bowen had eight saves for the Bobcats in goal.
“This game was a huge improvement from our game against South Haven,” Kovac said.
