Dowagiac blanked by Vicksburg in Wolverine opener

The scoreboard read 4-0 in favor of visiting Vicksburg following Wednesday night’s Wolverine Conference girls soccer match.
But the final score did not tell the entire story about how well the Chieftains played against the Bulldogs, who won by mercy-rule last spring.
Vicksburg led 2-0 at halftime and got a couple of goals that Dowagiac senior goalkeeper Grace Younger probably could have stopped.
But in the end, Wednesday night’s game was a win for the young Chieftain squad and its first-year head coach.
“Tonight’s match was a rough one on the pitch, but I thought the girls played extremely hard and played a lot better tonight as a team,” said Dowagiac coach Chad Davis. “We are starting to come around. The girls have been working very hard.
“Keeper Grace Younger ended up with 14 saves and gave up four goals. I thought she played very solid. I was most proud of our defense tonight. We played as a unit and stuck together the whole game. They did a wonderful job on the back line. Even though we didn’t win the game, I felt like we came out of their improved and ready for Friday against Brandywine.”
Dowagiac will travel to Niles tonight for the non-conference match against the Bobcats, which is slated to start at 5 p.m.
