Round Oak to host fundraiser for agency

Customers at Round Oak Revisited will have a chance to enjoy a good meal and support a worthy cause at the same time Wednesday.

The downtown restaurant is partnering with Domestic and Sexual Assault Services that evening for one of the organization’s “Dine for Dollars” fundraisers. From 4:30 to 9:30 p.m., the restaurant will donate 25 percent of the proceeds from customers’ bills (excluding alcohol) to the area support agency.

DASAS — an organization dedicated to providing counseling, shelter, legal aid and other services to victims and families impacted by domestic and sexual abuse — hosts several fundraisers of this style every year at restaurants in its service area, which includes Cass County. The agency has partnered with other local businesses in the past, including Zeke’s, The Wounded Minnow, the Dowagiac Pizza Hut and Lindy’s.

“It’s one of the simplest fundraisers we do: people just show up and eat dinner,” said Steve Grinnewald, Dowagiac director of public safety and a member of DASAS’ board of directors.

When Grinnewald and other DASAS board members approached the owners of Round Oak with the idea of hosting one of the fundraisers at their business, they were happy to jump on board, the police chief said.

Every year, DASAS is required to raise around $30,000 from the community for its operations, as a condition for the grant dollars the organization receives, Grinnewald said.

While DASAS members bring in a lot of this funding through their two major fundraisers, the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event in Three Rivers and the Survivor Stomp race in Russ Forest, the “Dine for Dollars” fundraisers help supplement the organization’s income in between these events, Grinnewald said.

DASAS leaders do not have any particular funding goals through these events, only to draw a large crowd to the restaurants that host them.

“The hope is that we can bring in enough people to support DASAS, but it also gives people a chance to try out these restaurants, perhaps for the first time,” Grinnewald said. “We generally fill most of the restaurants these nights. The owners may lose a portion of the profits they earn that night, but they gain a bunch of customers who will come back.”

DASAS staff and board members will also be dining at Round Oak that evening, and will be available to answer questions about the organization from customers, Grinnewald said. There will also be pamphlets and fliers on hand for people to take with them.

Grinnewald is hoping to draw another packed house Wednesday. He is encouraging people to come out to Round Oak Revisited and help support victims of abuse — a problem that still remains all too common in the Dowagiac area, Grinnewald said.

“The more people we can get, the better it is for us and the restaurant,” he said. “The customers get a good meal as well, so it’s a win for everybody.”
