Rangers win first district title in nine years

BRIDGMAN — A pair of Cass County teams suffered very different fates in the opening round of the state tournament Friday night.
Cassopolis needed its second straight double overtime to win the Class C district championship against host Bridgman, while Edwardsburg was eliminated in the Class B district semifinals by Three Rivers.
The Vicksburg district had to postpone Wednesday night’s games due to a power outage. The championship game was played Saturday night.
Class C at Bridgman
The Rangers were on the brink a couple of times against the Bees Friday night.
Cassopolis (18-4) allowed a seven-point second half lead disappear late and then had to overcome a four-point deficit with 30 seconds remaining in the first overtime.
In the end, the Rangers defeated Bridgman 60-57 to win its first district championship in nine years.
The two teams were deadlocked at 45-45 at the end of regulation and 55-55 after the first extra session.
Cassopolis outscored the Bees 5-2 in the second overtime to advance to tonight’s Class C regional semifinal against Quincy (19-4) at 5:30 p.m. in Bangor. The second game of the doubleheader will have Kalamazoo Christian (16-7) taking on Schoolcraft (22-1).
Shane Los led four Cassopolis players in double figures with 17 points.
Xander Smith added 12, while both Tyrese Hunt-Thompson and Kiambu Gary finished with 10.
Hunter Adams had a game-high 26 points for Bridgman.

Class B at Vicksburg
The Eddies came within a whisper of advancing to the Class B district championship game Friday night.
Edwardsburg (6-15) trailed Three Rivers (14-7) 59-57 in the closing seconds, but a Kev’on Taylor 3-pointer was no good and the Wildcats advanced with a 61-57 victory.
The game was close throughout as the two teams were tied at 15-15 after one, while the Eddies lead 27-25 at halftime.
Three Rivers reclaimed the lead (41-40) heading into the final quarter.
Chase Tarwacki had 19 points to lead the Eddies, while Dylan Layher added 14 and A.J. Rosebush 10.
Carson Charvat tied for game-high honors as he led the Wildcats with 19 points.
Three Rivers defeated Paw Paw 67-63 for the title.
