Athlete Showcase: Dowagiac’s Tania Wilson

Tania Wilson is a sophomore on the Dowagiac girls basketball team.

 

What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as an athlete?

TW: Winning more games on varsity this year than we did last year.

 

What has been one of your biggest disappointments as an athlete?

TW: Turning the ball over as a point guard.

 

What has been a hardship in your life?

TW: When my brother got in a really bad accident while I was playing in my game.

 

Who is a “hero” in your life and why?

TW: My old track coach Tracie Hatcher, because he always showed he cared. He motivates me.

 

When are you the most nervous while you are competing?

TW: When the score is close or tied and there is seconds left on the scoreboard and you have to make free throws.

Describe an embarrassing athletic moment.

TW: Missing a wide-open layup or air balling a wide-open jump shot.

 

How do you tend to work out/train when by yourself?

TW: I work on my shooting form.

 

What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not playing yours?

TW: Softball.

 

Why are sports an important part of a high school experience?

TW: It helps me keep my grades up and I was born with a gift and I have to use it. Also it is a way to get into college.

 

How would you give away $50,000?

TW: More basketball programs for girls.

If you could be the head coach of a team for a year, what team would you choose?

TW: The Dowagiac Middle School sixth-grade team if they had one.

 

If I did not play sports, I would…?

TW: Work.

 

What is the most challenging thing for you to do in your sport?

TW: Dribble left-handed with pressure being put on me.

 

If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?

TW: The five-second violation.

 

What is the best compliment you have ever received?

TW: “You have improved every year. If you continue to work hard, just watch what you will become by your senior year.”

 

What was the scariest thing you have had to do? Are you glad you did it?

TW: Boxing out a six-foot girl. Yes.

 

What was the last thing you saw someone do that really impressed you?

TW: Amiyah Smith scoring 20-plus points for the last three games.

 

What is your favorite hobby? Why?

TW: I have several — volleyball, basketball and track.
