Brandywine sweeps Hartford

While things may not have started the way that Brandywine coach Josh Hood had hoped for his basketball team against visiting Hartford, he was pleased with the effort of his players in the second half as Brandywine ran away with a 64-35 non-conference victory on Tuesday night.

“We are the tale of two halves lately,” Hood said. “We have to find a way to put 32 minutes together. We did a good job tonight of putting a run together, and did a better job of converting steals into baskets.”

Brandywine found itself in a hole early on as Hartford was pounding the ball inside for easy baskets, while the Bobcats could not get their own shots to fall.

“Give Hartford some credit, they have some big girls inside and they took advantage early,” Hood said.

Nicole Sachman led the charge for Brandywine midway through the first quarter and into the second. Sachman scored 12 of her 21 points in the first half and helped the Bobcats to a 29-22 halftime lead.

Brandywine dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Indians 18-4 in the quarter, with Zakiyyah Abdullah leading the way with 11 of her game-high 23 points coming in the stanza.

With the Bobcats holding a 47-26 lead heading into the final period, the Bobcats did not hold back, outscoring Hartford 17-9, including nine points from behind the arc.

“We have a lot to work on, to improve before March Madness,” Hood said. “We are just plugging along. Everyone says this is our rebuilding year, but we are pretty excited to be 11-3, and we are still battling through some stuff, and our focus is to get better before March.”

Brandywine faces a huge challenge Thursday night as it hosts Buchanan in a BCS Athletic Conference Red Division showdown.
