In November, the Michiana Metro Lighthouse Chorus pledged the proceeds from its annual Food Bank Fundraiser, “Fighting Hunger with Music,” would be donated to area food banks.
This week, the chorus followed through on that promise, presenting the Niles Salvation Army with a check for $2,638. The money is a portion of the $5,000 worth of proceeds the members will distribute among five food pantries in the area.
Other food pantries are located in Buchanan, Berrien Springs, Edwardsburg and Benton Harbor.
The leaders of the chorus said the contributions were made possible through the tremendous support of area businesses that advertised in the program and community members who attended the fundraiser.
The chorus also hosted a food drive the evening of the performance and collected more than 250 pounds of canned goods.
Based in Niles, the Lighthouse Chorus is a men’s a cappella chorus that sings primarily in the barbershop style of music. Using contemporary arrangements, the chorus performs a variety of music, including jazz, rock, patriotic, spirituals and ballads.
The members have performed in almost every southwest Michigan and northwest Indiana community, singing on stages, in parks, on sidewalks and in churches. They are always looking for new members and invite anyone who is interested to visit a rehearsal, which take place at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Grace United Methodist Church, located at 501 Grant St., Niles.
