Area football teams, coaches receive honors

Four area football teams earned academic all-state from the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association.
Out of the 142 teams that were nominated, Edwardsburg, Dowagiac, Buchanan and Cassopolis all received academic all-state in their respective divisions.
In Division 3, Edwardsburg had a team GPA of 3.757. There were 17 teams that earned the honor in that division.
In Division 5, Dowagiac had a team GPA of 3.665 and Buchanan at GPA of 3.654. There were 23 teams in Division 5 that earned academic all-state.
In Division 7, the Rangers had a team GPA of 3.000 There were 17 teams in that division to receive the honor.
The top four teams in each division will receive plaques honoring their achievement.
Individually, Buchanan’s Jacob Graham, Cassopolis’ Shane Los earned academic all-state honorable mention honors.
Region 7 Coach of the Year honors went to Edwardsburg’s Kevin Bartz and Cassopolis’ Dan Purlee.
Randy Brooks earned Assistant Coach of the Year honors. He follows A.J. Gaideski, who received the same award in 2015.
