Mary Siekman of Niles is a volunteer with the Salvation Army located 424 N. 15th St. Siekman has worked at the receptionist desk two days a week for more than a year and also helps out during some holiday events. Siekman is also a volunteer at Ellis House, where families find help getting basic supplies, such as diapers and clothing.
Why did you choose to volunteer at the Salvation Army?
Well, it is definitely a big help to our community. You are able to help some of the community who are less fortunate.
How did you get involved?
I just looked them up on the web and called and asked if they needed help. I was available to help. I don’t travel a lot, so it was something I could do to give back.
What has been the most rewarding part?
Well I work the desk so I hear sad stories all the time, but I guess it (the Salvation Army) is just a nice thing to be able to have.
What benefits does the Salvation Army offer to families in need?
We help with food by all means. We have a food pantry. We always have a big thing of bread available to the community. We have community lunch three days a week and we also help people with their utilities. We have a toy shop for parents who cannot afford things for their children (for Christmas) and on Thanksgiving we have a Thanksgiving dinner.
Why is it important to volunteer?
Because our community needs all the support they can get.
Well what would you say to others to get them to volunteer?
We have mostly older people, because of the obvious not everybody has the availability, but anything they can do to help is more than welcome. I would encourage people to give to their community.
