Local game store collecting games, toys for needy families

As co-owner Rob Davidson describes it, the staff of Dowagiac’s Radiant Rogue Games is not in the business of selling games — it is in the business of selling fun.
There is a ton of fun for children to have during the holidays, such as enjoying a marathon game of Risk or Monopoly with extended family or playing with new superhero action figures they received for Christmas, in the process creating moments they will carry with them the rest of their lives.
Davidson and the rest of Radiant Rogue are now asking for the community’s help to ensure that children from families dealing with financial difficulties can create the same fond holiday memories this year.
From now through Monday, Dec. 12, visitors to the downtown game shop can purchase a board or card game that will be donated to either the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots or the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree programs. The store has set up a special “plethora of games” table, where people can pay $10 to have an item of their choosing donated for the drive, Davidson said.
“A lot of the items on the table cost more than $10,” Davidson said. “But it is the time of year where sentimentality means more than money, and we want to support the community that supports us.”
Many of the items are from popular game makers such as Asmodee or IELLO, or feature popular children’s brands including Marvel Comics or My Little Pony, the storeowner said.
In addition, customers can purchase “mystery” toy boxes — which contain a random action figure — for donation for $1, less than the regular asking price of $2.99, Davidson said.
People can also donate sealed, unopened board games of their choice for the collection, rather than buying from the table.
This is the second year that Radiant Rogue, which has been open since August 2015, has offered its services to needy families for the holidays, donating several board games to Toys for Tots last December, the storeowner said. This year, though, Davidson and his staff wanted to do something to get the community involved with the effort as well.
“Perhaps I am old fashioned in this way, but I believe that Christmas is one special time of the year where humanity can really shine, if we want to,” Davidson said.
The staff is also interested in donating toys to a local family in need, he said. People with suggestions for a local family in need are asked to stop by the store and talk with Davidson or one of the other staff.
The store will also host a tournament at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17 for the popular card game Magic: The Gathering, which people can enter by donating four or more canned or nonperishable food items. The collected food will be donated to Dowagiac’s ACTION food pantry, Davidson said.
Radiant Rogue is located at 204 S. Front St., and is open from noon to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to midnight on Fridays and noon to 11 p.m. on Saturdays.
