County investigating series of car break-ins

Cass County authorities are on the hunt for a pair of men suspected of breaking into multiple vehicles in the Jefferson Township area over the last several weeks.

Deputies with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office are looking for two people believed to be responsible for the rash of thefts, after a surveillance camera captured footage of two men breaking into a parked car and stealing money from the inside of the vehicle during the early morning hours last Tuesday. After taking the money, the men appeared to have left the scene on foot.

Police were unable to discern any information about the physical attributes of the suspects.

The theft was one of nearly half-a-dozen car larcenies reported in Jefferson Township over the last several days, Jacobs said. Police believe that the pair of suspects have been entering vehicles parked in residential driveways or apartment complex parking lots in the area, stealing cash from the vehicles.

“They are only hitting cars that were unlocked, and only taking money from them,” Jacobs said. “They appear have rummaged through the glove boxes or interior portions of the car, looking for cash.”

Police believe the larcenies have occurred for at least the past two weeks, with the suspects hitting several vehicles every couple days, though never on consecutive days, Jacobs said.

Although the sheriff’s office receives several calls for vehicle theft every month, the circumstances in the Jefferson Township case lead investigators to believe they are related, Jacobs said.

“These seem to be all concentrated in one area, which indicates to us they are related and likely involve the same suspects,” he said. “When you have such a large amount of cases in one specific area, it sticks out.”

Police are asking for public assistance in the cases.

People can view the footage of the suspect thieves on the sheriff’s office Facebook page,

Until the cases are solved, Jefferson Township residents and those living in the area are asked to remain vigilant.

“Please lock your cars and report any suspicious activity,” Jacobs said.
