Union High School recognizes freshmen for academic excellence

Another batch of new Dowagiac Union High School students were recognized Tuesday for their success inside the classroom this year.
Several staff members rewarded a group of 47 freshmen students that morning during a ceremony inside the media center, during the school’s first Youth Experiencing Success program of the new school year. The students were honored for receiving all A’s and B’s on their report cards during the first marking period of the fall semester.
Joining mentor and YES program coordinator Douglas Pearson in recognizing the students was DUHS Principal Kelly Millin and Rachel Vig, assistant manager with the Dowagiac McDonald’s. Vig handed out coupons for a free value meal to every student awarded Tuesday.
The local McDonald’s is one of several businesses that have teamed up with the high school to recognize students through the YES program. Restaurant staff have handed out nearly 200 vouchers for free meals to students since they began working with the school in 2013, Pearson said.
The YES program will recognize another batch of students, for their leadership in the classroom, in mid-December, Pearson said.
