Incumbent Cobb retains seat on Cass County commission

Dowagiac’s E. Clark Cobb has retained his seat on the Cass County Board of Commissioners following the results of Tuesday’s general election.
According to unofficial results from the Cass County Clerk/Register Office, the Democrat incumbent defeated Republican challenger Leon “Andy” Anderson Jr. to retain his position as District 7 commissioner, by a vote of 1,485 to 1,263. Cobb carried three of the four voting precincts in the district to victory, including all three wards in the City of Dowagiac.
“My opponent, Andy Anderson, ran a good race,” Cobb said. “I am glad to be reelected and I am ready to do more for the people of the district.”
Cobb has served on the county board for the past eight years, winning his last two-year term in 2014 over challenger Wendy Alexander Glaser.
As District 7 commissioner, Cobb represents residents of the City of Dowagiac as well as Pokagon Township .The seat was the only one of the seven board positions contested Tuesday.
Cobb will serve a two-year term on the board.
Cobb joins fellow incumbents Dixie Ann File (District 2), Skip Dyes (District 3), Roseann Marchetti (District 4) and Robert Ziliak (District 5), as well as newcomers Terry Ausra (District 1) and Michael Grice (District 6) on the new board, which convenes for the first time in January. Cobb remains the sole Democrat among the commissioners.
“I am looking to working with the new board,” Cobb said. “I think it will be new and exciting.”
Only one other county position, Cass County Drain Commissioner, was contested Tuesday. Republican incumbent Bruce Campbell was leading Democrat challenger Tony Catanzarite by a vote of 9,738 to 5,057 as of press time, at 11:45 p.m.
Other county officials reelected in unopposed races were Prosecutor Victor
Fitz, Clerk/Register Monica Kennedy, Surveyor Thomas Stephenson and Treasurer Linda Pruett, all Republicans.
Also, Republican Richard Behnke was elected as the new Cass County Sheriff, who will take over from the retiring Joseph Underwood in January.
