While leaders have yet to decide who will serve as the next road commissioner, Cass County commissioners narrowed the field of candidates for the position Thursday.
The Cass County Board of Commissioners selected a pair of road commissioner candidates to come before the board for a second round of interviews during the board’s meeting Thursday night in Cassopolis. The county commissioners voted to have Byron Miller and Sandra Seanor, both of Edwardsburg, return for a second round of interviews before the board, which are tentatively scheduled to take place when the commissioners reconvene Thursday, Nov. 17, said County Administrator Karen Folks.
Miller and Seanor seek the position on the road commission board left by the impending departure of Road Commission Chairman Pete Fournier, who announced earlier this year that he will step down from the board at year’s end.
The board of commissioners interviewed both candidates, along with three other applicants for the position, earlier this year, Folks said.
According to application documents provided to the Daily News by the county, Seanor is a recent retiree who worked in public service for more than 30 years. She has served as executive director of several organizations in the Michiana area, including the Michiana Area Council of Governments, Metropolitan Planning Organization and St. Joseph River Basin Commission.
“I have more than 30 years of public sector service, with extensive experience in road, highway, transit and environmental planning [and] project selection,” Seanor said, in her application for the road commission position. “I am interested in assisting my community and providing my expertise.”
Miller’s background is in engineering, having served as an assistant city engineer in Elkhart, according to his application. He has also served on several boards in the past, including the Tri-State University Alumni Board of Governors and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Elkhart County.
“Public service has long been a part of my life,” Miller said in his application. “As a resident of the county, I see many opportunities to improve the quality of life for the citizens of the county. I would like to participate and see what we can do together, to continue to establish a better transportation system that increases safety and travel efficiency.”
