Area teams open up tournament play Monday

The start of any state tournament can be a bit scary, but for area volleyball teams Monday night will be a real scream as the district tournament gets under way on Halloween.
First round matches in Class B and Class C will be Monday night with the opening round in Class A will be Tuesday night.
Tickets are $5 per person and no passes will be accepted.
Class A at Mattawan
Niles (45-3-4) will face Kalamazoo Central at Mattawan. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
The Vikings defeated the Maroon Giants five sets during the regular season.
The second match Monday night will pit Portage Northern against Portage Central at approximately 7 p.m.
The winner of the Niles-Kalamazoo Central match faces host Mattawan at 7 p.m. Thursday. The winner of the Northern and Central match advances to face St. Joseph in the first semifinal at 5 p.m. Thursday.
The championship match is scheduled for 10 a.m. Nov. 5 with the winner moving on to the Coldwater regional.
Class B at Vicksburg
The teams competing in the Vicksburg district will not have to do much research on each other as they are all members of the Wolverine Conference.
Rivals Dowagiac and Edwardsburg will play in the only first round match Monday night.
The Chieftains and Eddies will play at 6 p.m. with the winner advancing to Wednesday’s 6 p.m. semifinal against Three Rivers.
Host Vicksburg and Paw Paw both received opening round byes and will square off in the second semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The winners advance to the 6 p.m. finals on Thursday.
Class B at Stevensville
Lakeshore is hosting the other Class B district and will play the winner of Monday night’s Buchanan-Berrien Spring match at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The Bucks (43-6) and Shamrocks will play in the second match at 7 p.m. Monday at Lakeshore.
Benton Harbor will face South Haven in the first match at 5:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to Wednesday to face Coloma.
The championship match is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
Class C at Watervliet
There are no strangers at the Watervliet district either as all six teams have faced each other at least once this season.
Brandywine will face New Buffalo in the first game at 5:30 p.m. Monday, while Bridgman and Eau Claire will square off at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The winner of the Bobcats-Bison match advances to face host Watervliet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Bees-Beavers winner advances to take on Cassopolis in the second semifinal at 7:30 p.m.
The championship match is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday.
