Athlete Showcase: Edwardsburg’s Jacob Kanaby

Jacob Kanaby is a senior on the Edwardsburg tennis team.
What has been one of your biggest disappointments as an athlete?
JK: My biggest disappointment as an athlete came my sophomore year when I got rotator cuff tendinitis. It happened a week before conference and I wasn’t able to participate. This was disappointing because I had earned a high seed and got a nice draw. This was a hardship in my life that I had to overcome.
Who is a “hero” in your life and why?
JK: I would say that my father is a “hero” in my life. I try not to admit that, but it is what it is. It seems as though I am always striving to one-up him.
When are you the most nervous while you are competing?
JK: I am pretty loose when I am playing but if I am nervous it is at the beginning of a match against a strong opponent.
Describe an embarrassing athletic moment.
JK: In a high school baseball game last year I thought I made the third out of an inning as the pitcher and started running back to the dugout. Turns out, I had made the second out of the inning. I felt pretty embarrassed jogging back out to the mound.
How do you tend to work out/train when by yourself?
JK: When working out/training by myself I like to listen to music. The music pumps me up and keeps me focused.
What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not playing yours?
JK: I would like to compete in badminton if I wasn’t playing baseball or tennis.
Why are sports an important part of a high school experience?
JK: Sports are an important part of high school. They help keep me active physically. Sports help me with time management and keep me honest with my grades. They are also a great way to make friends.
How would you give away $50,000?
JK: If I happened to have $50,000 extra dollars I would definitely put a good chunk of it towards my college education. I would also invest part of it in the stock market.
If I did not play sports, I would…?
JK: If I did not play sports I would be very bored. Simply enough, I would not know what to do with my spare time.
