Mike Haviland, 74, of Niles is the 2016 National Champion for the 70-74 age group of the North Coast 24-hour endurance run, which took place in Cleveland Sept. 17-18.
Haviland has run in the race three times. He graduated from Niles High School in 1959.
“As a former Niles resident I am proud my accomplishment,” he said. “And hope the National Championship brings a little recognition and notoriety to my hometown and to the Niles Class of 1959.”
Haviland has completed over 13 different 100-mile endurance races in California’s Badwater in Death Valley.
“The USA Track and Field Championships are special,” he said. “Because of the official sanctioning and because if you win you are a national champion.”
