Published 9:12 am Wednesday, August 24, 2016
Mackenzie Morgan, of Edwardsburg, is a 2016 graduate of Edwardsburg High School. She will be attending Southwestern Michigan College this fall. Morgan was very involved volunteer with the Edwardsburg Leos service club and was a recipient of a $500 scholarship from the Edwardsburg Lions Club, the parent organization for the Leos.
How long have you been in the Leos Club?
Two years.
How did you get involved?
One of my former friends was in Leos. She told me about it and said I should join. I joined and it has been a great experience for me.
In what ways did you volunteer for the Leos Club?
In those two years I have volunteered with their Polar Plunge event, Special Olympics basketball, the pancake breakfast they put on for Easter and the Relay for Life. I have also done Dinner in the Dark, which is a dinner that shows what it is like to become blind or be blind.
It starts out dim and by the time you are served dessert you have the option to be in total darkness by wearing a blindfold. That is a fundraiser they do.
They actually have a lady who is blind that attends. She speaks about what it is like being blind and how she really appreciates the support.
What has been the most rewarding part?
I would say that just giving back to the community because most of the stuff the Leos have done is for the community. That is rewarding to me because I get to make a difference and I know it makes a difference.
Based on your experience with the Leos, will you continue to volunteer in the future?
Yes. I feel that volunteering with the Leos has helped me become a better person, so I can see myself volunteering in the future.
What would you say to encourage others to volunteer?
I would say to them that volunteering is a good thing to do.If you have the opportunity to volunteer for something you should go ahead and do it because it makes you feel better about yourself because you are helping others and helping a program.
