There will be no contested school board races in the Niles, Brandywine or Buchanan Community Schools districts during the general election in November, according to the Berrien County Clerk’s office.
Two people have filed to run for two six-year terms on the Niles Community Schools Board of Education. The filing deadline was July 26.
Incumbent Dana Daniels is seeking another term in office while incumbent Mark Weber, who was appointed to the seat in April, hopes to stay on the board. Weber was appointed after Jon Martin had to resign when he moved out of the district.
Niles Trustee Jeff Curry said during the Aug. 1 school board meeting that he decided not to run for reelection.
Niles also has a seat open for a two-year term, but no one filed to run for the seat. Curry said while that means the seat could go to a write-in candidate, it might be possible for the board to appoint someone to serve until the next filing deadline in two years. He said the issue would be researched.
The deadline to file as a write-in candidate is Oct. 28. The partial-term seat came open when Martin resigned.
At Brandywine Community Schools, three people have filed to run for three open seats. All are for four-year terms.
Incumbent Janis Exner is seeking another term while newcomers Brian Burge and Holly Pomranka have also filed. Trustee Dennis Cooper and Treasurer Robb DeJonge did not file to run for reelection.
At Buchanan Community Schools, two people have filed to run for two open seats on the board. Both are for six-year terms.
Incumbent Harvey Burnett, Jr., and newcomer Christopher Lee have filed for the two seats.
Trustee Lloyd Miller did not file to run for reelection.
