Nick Shelton and Bob Durm are moving on in the race for Niles mayor after finishing as the top two vote getters in Tuesday’s primary election.

Shelton, a fourth generation fruit peddler with Shelton’s Farms, won each of the city’s four wards convincingly, while Bob Durm finished second in each of the wards and Rex Carpenter third, according to unofficial results from Electionmagic.com.

According to the election tracking website, Shelton led with 344 votes. Durm finished with 150 votes. Carpenter received 22 votes.

Shelton, 30, said he was excited, overwhelmed and humbled upon seeing the results.

“It is really exciting to see the people of Niles rally for something they care about. I am just really excited and grateful for that,” he said. “I really just can’t thank those people enough. It means a lot to me. I am ready to keep working hard and to keep fighting over the next three months so we can hopefully win in November. I am really appreciative of those people [who voted] and truly grateful.”

Durm, 51, a longtime member of the Niles City Council, was also gracious toward his supporters.

“I want to thank the people who did vote for me and I look forward to continuing the campaign,” he said.

Carpenter, 60, a retired auto mechanic who runs the city’s popular weekly car shows, said while he is disappointed with the result, he is glad he made the effort to make his hometown a better place.

“I am disappointed that I didn’t make it through but for those who did I hope they follow through and can make Niles a better Niles,” he said.
