A multi-million dollar investment in Buchanan’s future will be unveiled during a commencement ceremony for a new program called the Buchanan Promise next week.
An email from the Buchanan Area Chamber of Commerce said the Buchanan Promise aims to advance the Buchanan community by providing scholarships to graduates of Buchanan Community Schools.
The same email said the scholarships are made possible through the generosity of the Walter E. Schirmer, Jr., Trust gift to the Michigan Gateway Community Foundation, a non-profit that holds and invests endowed funds for agencies and donors and distributes the earnings through grants to other non-profits the area.
The MGCF President Rob Habicht declined to talk further about the new program, saying they want to save the details for the commencement Aug. 10 at Buchanan Middle School.
“We really aren’t releasing any information at this point,” he said.
Habicht said MGCF has been working on this project since January of 2015. He said invitations to the commencement were sent to more than 200 people throughout the Buchanan community.
