Brandywine develops candidate profile for next superintendent

Brandywine has taken another step toward finding its next superintendent.
On Friday, the district’s search firm announced that the school board had completed the process of developing a candidate profile and has officially posted the position for a new superintendent to potential internal candidates.
The profile was developed by the board after considering input from 76 surveys submitted on the district’s website and 80 people, including students, staff and community members, who attended meetings with search consultant Gary Rider.
According to a tentative schedule, the deadline for internal applicants to apply is July 6. The board is expected to conduct first round interviews July 18 and second round interviews, if necessary, July 25.
Rider, regional president of the Michigan Leadership Institute, said the school board would use the candidate profile to assess potential candidates to succeed Supt. John Jarpe, who will retire at the end of the 2016/17 school year.
“They don’t measure candidates against each other, they measure candidates against he profile,” he said. “It provides a semi-objective way for school boards to look at their candidates and assess them.”
While Rider did not provide any names, he said he had informal conversations with people interested in the position.
Rider said state law allows applicants the choice to remain confidential up until the time the applicant accepts an invitation by the board to be interviewed for the job.
“That is when we turn loose who is interviewing,” he said.
Rider also commended the community for its involvement in the process of developing the candidate profile, including through an online survey.
“Statistically we were looking for more than 50 (surveys), so getting 76 was great,” he said. “We were very pleased with the response we got.”
