Police are looking for the driver of a vehicle that left the scene of an accident where a motorcyclist was injured late Thursday morning.
The accident occurred at the intersection of South 17th Street and Silverbrook Street in the City of Niles at approximately 11:30 a.m.
David Bosch, of the Niles Police Department, said a vehicle traveling west from Miller Street to Silverbrook Street across South 17th Street failed to yield to a motorcycle traveling south on South 17th Street.
Bosch said the driver of the motorcycle, a 53-year-old Niles man, laid down the bike to avoid the collision, resulting in minor injuries to the motorcyclist. There was no contact between the passenger vehicle and the bike.
The driver of the bike was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend by Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service.
Bosch said the driver of the car stopped and exited the vehicle, but then fled the scene before authorities arrived.
A witness described the vehicle as a newer, dark blue, four-door car, possibly a Toyota Camry. The driver was described as a white male with grey hair and a thin build wearing sunglasses and a white shirt.
Bosch said he would like to talk to the driver of the vehicle.
“If anyone has any information it would be something I’d like to follow up on,” he said.
Bosch said the accident would not be considered a hit and run because there was no contact between the bike and the car. However, he said the driver of the car could be cited for failing to render aid, a misdemeanor.
