MISHAWAKA, Ind. — Other than hanging out at bars and clubs, it may seem like there are not a lot of options for the 21 and up crowd, some members of the Mishawaka community say. To remedy this, the Mishawaka Business Association hosts the Kamm Island fest every year.
“Everyone says it’s kinda like a reunion, like a community reunion. You just go out and relax with everyone,” said Amber Kennedy, executive director of the MBA.
The 13th annual Kamm Island Fest will be from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 30. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased in advance at the City of Mishawaka Clerk’s Office, at the MBA office or at the gate.
The festival will have art and vintage car and bike shows, as well as bands and food.
“It’s growing every year. It used to be just a band and some food, and then they added the art and car shows. That’s just growing like crazy. It grows every year,” Kennedy said. “I think there is something for everyone at this event. And the food is just fabulous. It’s local.”
This 21 and up event began to bring people in the community together.
The band Blammo will play at the event once again, as well as The Sandbar Bums and Caledonia Kilty Pipe Band.
Food from local restaurants like Bonnie Doon Drive-In, Lincolnway Café, Morgan’s LBD Tavern, Smith’s Downtown, Treehouse Shinebar, The Upper Crust and others will be available at the Taste of Mishawaka.
“It’s a fun night out,” Kennedy said.
As more and more retail shops left the downtown area, the city decided to switch gears and try to bring people back for the restaurants.
“This was started to help restaurants on a slow night. To get people out and involved in the community,” Kennedy said. “The other huge draw is Kamm Island itself. It’s fantastic, a nice little place. It’s just a wonderful atmosphere for all of the festivities going on.”
