Two improvisation groups, including Bohemian Grandma, will be performing at the Barn Swallow Theatre Friday night.

Bohemian Grandma consists of seven cast members from both Cassopolis and Edwardsburg. It has been performing together since August of 2015.

Making up the troupe are Seth Andrews, Ben Shafer, Haley Bumgarner and Kaelle Vernon of Edwardsburg, along with Jaqueline Kelley-Cogdell, Eric Bosler and Amelia Ayers of Cassopolis.

“I saw an improv group in Chicago and then I called some people,” Andrews said of forming Bohemian Grandma.

“We just started doing it for fun,” Bumgarner said. “We were like, hey, we made money off this one, so let’s start doing this more.”

Andrews said that Pick-a-Part Theatre has been instrumental in helping them grow as a troupe.

“They are really tied into the improv scene,” Andrews said. “We are emerging and we are going to be having more regular shows after the one this Friday.”

On Friday, Pick-a-Part Theatre, another improv group, will open the show at 7:30 p.m. and perform for 30 minutes. Bohemian Grandma when then take the stage for an hour.

The show will include audience participation, interactive games, fun and prizes, including homemade “grandma’s” cookies.

“Come for the show, stay for the cookies,” Bumgarner said.

“It is fun. It is grandma themed and expect to laugh,” Andrews said. “And maybe win at bingo, but don’t expect it though. It is a good chance for us to connect with the audience and get a feel for what they think is funny so we can adapt. Since we have no idea what we are going to do before the show. We just know the format. What the audience gives us creates everything.”

“Audience participation is a huge part of improv,” Bumgarner added. “You get suggestions from the audience and we actually pull members of the audience down to help with the scene. It is really a good time for the audience to get involved and have some fun with it.”

Tickets are $5 per person and can be purchased at the door.
