CASSOPOLIS — The Village of Cassopolis found a sewer spill on Saturday afternoon that was caused by a broken 12-inch force main.
An estimated amount of about 100,000 gallons leaked on to the ground out in the woods away from any residential area before pump trucks could get to the upstream lift station to pump and haul the waste to a downstream location.
Once the flow was rerouted by manually pumping and hauling, the break was excavated and repaired. Clean up of the area was done by the spread of disinfectant lime. The sewage was contained to and no bodies of water were impacted.
The Village is working with an engineering company to figure out the cause of the break to prevent further breaks from occurring.
