Break-in prompts Niles AmVets to host fundraiser

The AmVets Post 1978 in Niles is hosting a fundraiser after the veterans service organization was robbed earlier this year.
The fundraiser, which will take the form of flea market, is scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at the American Veterans property at 1117 E. Bertrand Road in Niles Township, across from Rural King.
A membership in AmVets is open to anyone who has served or is serving in the U.S. Armed Forces and their families. It provides camaraderie and support for its members.
According to police, someone broke into the AmVets building Feb. 2 and stole two safes containing money belonging to the AmVets.
Post Commander Richard Hopper said nearly $6,000 was stolen and that the building was damaged as a result of the break in.
“The idea that someone would hit a military post is unbelievable,” he said. “It is like no one has respect anymore.”
Hopper, who won $1 million in last week’s drawing of the Mega Millions lottery, said he does not want to publicize any donation he might make to the AmVets Post.
He encouraged anyone to come to the fundraiser, not just to support AmVets, but also to engage with local veterans.
“We want the community to be involved if they are available,” he said. “We are very appreciative of the support we’ve received from the community and hope to see a lot of people out here. It will be fun.”
AmVets members will offer for sale food and beverages to those in attendance.
Booth space remains open for vendors. To rent a spot, call (269) 683-3560.
Hopper said AmVets is also taking applications for new members. Applications will be available at the event. Hopper said there are more than 100 members currently.
AmVets members meet at 1 p.m. on the third Sunday of each month.
The organization also hosts monthly breakfasts and fish fries that are open to the public.
