140 to graduate from Dowagiac Union High School Sunday

The Chieftain alumni base will grow by 140 students this Sunday as the Class of 2016 turns its tassel.
The annual commencement story for Dowagiac Union High School is at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at the Chris Taylor Alumni Field. The ceremony will be relocated to the high school gymnasium in case of inclement weather.
Nine students will be graduating from the district’s Pathfinders Alternative & Adult Education.
Of the 131 graduating Dowagiac Union High School students 34 (26 percent) plan to attend a four-year university in the fall. Eight of the students (6 percent) plan to attend a technical school, one (1 percent) plans to enter the military, 11 (8 percent) will enter the workforce and 77 (59 percent) intend on furthering their education at a community college.
The program will feature speeches from Valedictorian Jessica Burns, Salutatorian Justin Yakim, superintendent Paul Hartsig and board of education president Larry Schmidt.
There will be performances from the Dowagiac Union High School band and choir.
