Increased turnout for Presidential Primary in Berrien County

Polling centers were busy across Berrien County during Tuesday’s Presidential Primary Election.
More than 28 percent of the county’s registered voters cast a ballot, a huge increase over the 16.5 percent that turned out for the 2012 Presidential Primary.
Donald Trump was the winner on the Republican ticket statewide with 36.5 percent of the vote. Ted Cruz finished second with 24.9 percent of the vote and John Kasich third with 24.3 percent.
On the Democratic ticket, Bernie Sanders narrowly defeated Hillary Clinton with 49.8 percent of the vote to Clinton’s 48.3 percent.
Cities and townships also saw a large turnout for the race, including a 27 percent turnout in Niles Township, 25 percent turnout in Buchanan and a 21.6 percent turnout in the City of Niles.
