Detectives are investigating a fatal fire that began in a detached garage in the 2400 block of Rebecca Lane in Niles Township Tuesday evening.
Chief Gary Brovold, of the Niles Township Fire Department, said one person was found dead inside the garage, which was described as being larger than a two car garage. The structure is located in the Oak Manor neighborhood.
The deceased has been identified as 52-year-old Denis Frame.
Firefighters were dispatched shortly before 6 p.m. on a report of a garage fire with explosions.
They arrived to find a fully involved garage fire that was in danger of spreading to the home.
Brovold said it appears that one person was living at the residence. That person was found inside the garage.
The fire did not spread to the home, but melted some of the home’s siding.
Brovold said the cause of the fire is being investigated by a state fire investigator and a detective from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.
He said a motorcycle, garden tractor and a vehicle were inside the garage, along with other things that could have accounted for the explosions heard.
