Update: Lunker’s auction postponed

An auction of merchandise from the now closed Lunker’s sporting goods store has been postponed, according to one of the auctioneers.
Pat Portolese, of Portolese Family Auction Service, said a person in charge of overseeing the property while it is in foreclosure informed him Friday afternoon that the auction would not take place Jan. 23 and 24 as planned.
Portolese said this is the second time it has been postponed.
“I was told there will still be an auction [in the future],” he said, adding that it would likely happen in mid- to late February.
Lunker’s, a well-known outdoor sports store and restaurant in Edwardsburg, closed abruptly in June 2015.
The auction was advertised on the Auction Zip website for Jan. 23 and 24. It was to be conducted by Portolese Family Auction and Kasers Auction Service.
The listing showed hundreds of items up for grabs, including numerous firearms, ammunition, restaurant equipment, catering equipment, animal mounts, fishing gear, camping gear and more.
The building itself was not included in the auction.
Lunker’s started as a small bait shop in 1985, but eventually expanded to the 60,000 square foot facility seen today. Angler’s Inn, the restaurant, opened in 1992.
Upon the sudden closure in June, a Lunker’s press release said the business had been placed into receivership — a type of corporate bankruptcy — by Teacher’s Credit Union, which had provided Lunker’s with a commercial loan years ago.
The status of the building itself remains unclear. Attempts to reach TCU were not immediately successful.
