An Indiana woman faces up to 15 years in prison after pleading no contest to a charge stemming from last year’s fatal robbery at the Long John Silver’s restaurant in Niles.
Kavina Ward, 27, will be sentenced later this month in Berrien County Trial Court in Niles on one count of unarmed robbery, a felony carrying a maximum of 15 years in prison.
Ward entered the plea during a case conference Monday in front of Berrien County Judge Dennis Wiley.
Assistant Prosecutor Amy Byrd said Ward agreed to plead no contest in exchange for the prosecutor’s office dropping the original charges against her of armed robbery and felony firearm.
Armed robbery carries a maximum penalty of life in prison, while felony firearm has a minimum penalty of two years in a state penitentiary.
The prosecutor’s office said Ward, a former Long John Silver’s employee, is suspected of dropping Eddie Macon, Jr., nearby the Niles fast food restaurant on May 2, 2014.
Macon, who was armed with a pistol, robbed the restaurant and, while attempting to flee the scene, was shot and killed by police.
Ward’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Dec. 28.
