Long time Niles City Councilman and business owner Scott Clark passed away of natural causes on Friday at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
Clark, 57, was a sixth generation Niles resident, and served on the Niles City Council for 18 years representing the Fourth Ward. He was the owner of Clark’s Service in Niles for more than 30 years.
Perhaps one of the most telling events of his personality and dedication to the Niles community, Clark was named Man of the Year by the Four Flags Area Chamber of Commerce in 2012.
Mayor Mike McCauslin said Clark was a good friend and will be deeply missed not only by his family and friends, but by the city and greater community. He extended sympathies to Clark’s family.
“When I think of Scott, I think of Sinatra’s ‘My Way.’ Scott lived life his way and on his terms. Never one to conceal his emotions, Scott worked passionately on the council and at Clark’s Service,” the mayor said. “He was always available to help someone in need. Many times and particularly at council meetings, what people may have mistaken as anger or malice was simply Scott’s way of working diligently and passionately for the city. He loved the city and enjoyed serving on the council. His presence on the council and in the city, his wisdom and his passion will be greatly missed.”
Councilman Tim Skalla said Clark was extremely generous and loved Niles completely.
“His dedication will be sorely missed,” Skalla said.
Councilman David Mann said he would miss his colleague and friend.
“Although very passionate about what he believed, he was no less kind and had one of the deepest hearts in town. I saw him many times reach out and help those who were not as fortunate as himself,” Mann said. “He truly cared for this community, his friends, and most importantly, his family.”
