A 65-year-old amputee from Niles received the city’s Community Hero Award for helping put out a fire at the Niles Housing Commission in October.
Niles Mayor Mike McCauslin presented the award to the wheelchair-bound Mark Granning during a special presentation at Monday’s regular meeting of the Niles City Council.
“I do appreciate this,” Granning said. “I didn’t ever realize this was going to happen.”
The fire occurred on the evening of Oct. 10 at the seven-story public housing complex at 251 Cass St. It is commonly referred to as the Niles high-rise.
Granning, who lives on the third floor of the building, used two fire extinguishers to knock down the fire, which broke out in the apartment unit next to his.
The Army veteran unloaded the extinguishers from his wheelchair while seated just outside the doorway of the affected apartment unit.
“I learned a lot of things in the military — when something needs to be done you don’t really think about it, you just do it,” he said in an interview two days after the fire.
Mayor McCauslin praised Granning for his bravery, saying his actions helped keep residents safe and limited damage to the building.
