Officials with the City of Niles utilities division are reporting that minimal damage and outages were caused as a result of Thursday’s windy weather.
Utilities Supt. Gregg Watson said as of 2 p.m. outages were limited to a few that affected just one or two customers.
A downed tree, he said, destroyed a block garage in the 1500 block of Cherry Street.
“There was not too much on our side,” said Utilities Manager Jeff Dunlap. “Our tree maintenance has cut out most of our large outages.”
Watson said the utilities department recently began prioritizing heavy cutting and tree removal to areas where a downed tree or limb would affect the most customers.
“That minimizes the large tree-related outages,” he said.
The National Weather Service of Northern Indiana issued a high wind warning for Thursday with sustained winds of 30 to 45 miles per hour and gusts between 50 and 60 miles per hour.
The high wind warning was downgraded to a wind advisory by early Thursday afternoon.
