BUCHANAN — Local runners competed in the MHSAA Divisions 1 and 2 Regionals on Halloween morning at RedBud last Saturday.
Local Division 2 schools included Niles, Edwardsburg and Dowagiac. Division 3 schools included Buchanan, Brandywine, Berrien Springs and Bridgman.
The Division 3 girls teams kicked off the morning at Redbud.
The highest finish of local runners was Bridgman’s Mary Wheeler with a time of 22:14.4, good enough for 11th place. Buchanan’s Brooke Wesner finished 25th with a time of 23:36.7. Brandywine’s highest finisher, Juelianina Zimmerman, came in 27th (223:38.9).
The Bridgman girls finished third overall as a team and Buchanan finished ninth. Berrien Springs and Brandywine did not field enough runners to qualify for team scores.
In the boy’s race, Bridgman’s Brian Njuguna finished first overall with a blazing time of 16:58.8, one of only five runners all day to finish with a time under 17 minutes.
Brandywine’s most successful runner James Harrell placed sixth (17:33.8) and Buchanan’s Garret Lollar posted an impressive 20:16.8, the best time of all local freshman.
The only local team to place was Bridgman, which finished first with 46 points to easily outdistance runner-up Watervliet, which finished with 66 points.
The Division 2 teams took to the course next, but the local teams struggled to be competitive.
Edwardsburg sophomore Cameron Cleveland placed highest in the girls run with a time of 21:31.9. Niles freshman Taylor Altergott was the fastest on her team (21:59.3) and Emily Dodd was the highest placing Chieftain (24:10.2).
Overall, the Eddies finished sixth as a team, the Vikings finished 11th and the Chieftains placed 14th.
The boys had a tough day against some stiff competition and again it was Edwardsburg with the highest finish of local runners.
Eddies’ freshman Brock Eaves finished 40th (18:37.6) with Viking’s sophomore Devonte Gaskill right behind him (18:43.8).
Unfortunately, local schools rounded out the bottom in overall team rankings. Niles finished 13th, Edwardsburg in 14th and Dowagiac 15th.
In Division 4 at Portage, Cassopolis’ Amy Adams finished 11th overall with a time of 21:31.7 to advance to the finals, which will be held next week at Michigan International Speedway.
The Rangers were seventh as a team.
