Niles Twp. sets hours for trick or treating

The official trick-or-treat time has been set for Niles Charter Township.
At Monday’s regular meeting of the township board of trustees, Supervisor Jim Stover announced that kids could go door-to-door in pursuit of candy and treats between the hours of 6 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31.
That is the same time and date as the door-to-door trick or treat in the City of Niles.
Buchanan’s trick-or-treat time is also set for between 6 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31.
Also Monday, the trustees:
• Approved a contract with Kachur Tree Service, of Niles, to remove two dead trees at 1996 and 1998 Lewis Drive. The cost is $1,000.
• Tabled the first reading of the township’s new zoning ordinance at the advice of the township’s attorney. A draft of the ordinance is available on the township website: nilestwpmi.gov.
• Discussed raising the amount the township would contribute to public road improvements through Public Act 188 from 20 percent to 50 percent per project. Board members did not settle on an amount, saying they needed more information to determine how much they could afford to spend.
• Heard from resident Don Swartz, of 3021 Adams Road. Swartz attended the board’s last meeting Oct. 5 to plead his case after his request to build a pole barn on his property was denied by the township’s zoning board of appeals. Swartz said he was following up to see if any changes had been made to the zoning ordinance that would allow him to build the pole barn. Trustee Richard Cooper said the issue is being addressed in the township’s new zoning ordinance, which likely won’t be ready for another three months, or longer. Cooper said nothing could be done until that time, but that Swartz might be able to build the pole barn according to rules spelled out in the new ordinance.
• Learned that the park board used excess revenue of $14,000 to purchase new signs for South Fireman’s Park and Community Park and three new benches and portable restrooms for placement along the River Valley Trail.
