Three people were taken to the hospital after a fire broke out at the high rise apartment complex on Cass Street in Niles Saturday night, according to the Niles Fire Department.
Taner Dalenberg, the acting shift lieutenant with the city’s fire department, said Sunday morning that the fire occurred in a third floor apartment at the Niles Housing Commission, a low-income housing structure located at 251 Cass St.
The cause is still under investigation.
Dalenberg could not provide additional information about the three people taken to the hospital.
The fire occurred around 9 p.m. and several fire departments were called to help as part of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System.
Dalenberg said two residents of the apartment complex were able to keep the fire in check prior to firefighters arriving on scene.
Dalenberg was unable to say how the fire started or at where in the apartment unit the fire originated.
The building was evacuated, but residents have since been allowed back inside.
Dalenberg said there was heavy smoke and heat damage to the unit where the fire occurred.
