A Niles man pleaded guilty Monday to taking money from an employee of a Niles gas station.
Anthony Maurice Sharp, 30, pleaded guilty in Berrien County Court in Niles to one count of larceny from a person — a felony carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
Sharp was originally charged with one count of unarmed robbery — a more serious crime with a 15-year maximum.
Prosecutor Jerry Vigansky said his office dropped the original charge for the lesser one in exchange for Sharp’s agreement to plead guilty. Vigansky also agreed to waive Sharp’s repeat offender status during sentencing.
According to a press release from the Niles Police Department, Sharp robbed the Admiral Gas Station at 1701 Oak St. in Niles just after midnight Sept. 8.
Sharp told Judge Dennis Wiley Monday that he grabbed a gas station employee and ordered her to open the cash register before fleeing with the money.
Police said a witness recognized Sharp from video surveillance. Sharp was arrested without incident the day after the crime.
He is being held on a $15,000 cash or surety bond.
He will be sentenced Oct. 19 in Berrien County Court in Niles.
