SOUTH BEND, Ind. — American playwright Christopher Durang’s Tony winner for Best Play, critics say “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” is a wildly funny farce.

In the play, a self-absorbed movie star, Masha, returns to the family farmhouse (with her 20-something boy-toy Spike in tow) to visit her brother Vanya and sister Sonia.

Also on the scene are sassy maid Cassandra, who can predict the future, and a lovely, young aspiring actress named Nina, whose prettiness somewhat worries Masha. The genial reunion soon turns into a hilarious free-for-all filled with wild costume parties, voodoo dolls and romance.

The New York Times say in Vanya and Sonya and Masha and Spike, “Broad comic acting is raised to the level of high art…deliriously funny…a heedless good time.”

The Huffington Post says it is “Hilarious…You’ve only spent a weekend with these people, but you might want to spend the rest of your life with Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.”

The Civic warns parents that the show contains adult situations and language.

In South Bend, “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” is directed by Jim Geisel and features Sam Blevins, Melissa Manier, Lucinda Moriarty, Marybeth Saunders and Bill Svelmoe in the cast.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, Wednesday and Thursday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike performs Sept. 11 to 27 in the Warner Theatre, 403 N Main Street in South Bend.
